Blueberry River First Nations is a Treaty 8 community of Dane-zaa and Cree people based at Buick Creek in the Peace River region of northeastern British Columbia.
Blueberry River First Nations is home to Dane-zaa (Beaver) and Cree people, who live together as one community. For thousands of years their ancestors lived on land that runs from the Rocky Mountains into northwestern Alberta, where the Peace River flows. Today the Nation's territory covers more than 3.8 million hectares of the Peace River region. The Dane-zaa creation story tells how Sky Keeper made the Dane-zaa, the "real people."
The Nation's ancestors signed an adhesion to Treaty 8 at Fort St. John in 1900. In 1977 the Fort St. John Beaver Band split into Doig River First Nation and Blueberry River First Nations. In 2021 the court ruled in Yahey v. British Columbia that the province had infringed the Nation's Treaty 8 rights, and in 2023 the Nation and the province signed an implementation agreement.
The community is based at Buick Creek, about 80 km northwest of Fort St. John. Each of the five major families chooses a councillor, and council then chooses the Chief. The Nation's values centre on self-government, transparency and building a sustainable, self-reliant and vibrant community. Its departments include:
